Background of the Study

Empathy in healthcare refers to the ability of healthcare providers to understand, share, and respond to the emotional and psychological experiences of patients. In emergency nursing, where patients are often in acute distress, the role of empathy becomes essential in fostering trust and comfort. At Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, emergency nurses interact with patients under highly stressful and traumatic conditions, such as accidents, trauma, and sudden illness. Their ability to demonstrate empathy can significantly influence the patient's emotional experience, the quality of care received, and overall patient satisfaction.

Empathy is associated with better patient outcomes, improved communication, and higher levels of patient satisfaction. In the context of emergency nursing, empathy has been shown to reduce patient anxiety, enhance cooperation, and foster a sense of security during medical interventions. Despite the clear importance of empathy in emergency care, little research has been done to evaluate the specific impact of emergency nurses' empathy on patient experiences at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi. This study aims to fill this gap by exploring how emergency nurses’ empathy influences the patients’ perception of care, emotional well-being, and overall satisfaction with the care provided.

Statement of the Problem

Emergency nursing involves fast-paced and high-pressure situations, which may leave nurses with limited time to interact empathetically with patients. However, a lack of empathy in such settings can lead to negative patient experiences, including feelings of neglect, fear, or dissatisfaction with care. At Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, it is essential to evaluate how emergency nurses' empathy impacts patient outcomes, especially in terms of emotional support and patient satisfaction. This study will address the potential link between empathetic nursing care and the quality of the patient experience in emergency settings.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of emergency nurses’ empathy on patient experience in Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi.
  2. To assess the relationship between nurse empathy and patient satisfaction in the emergency department.
  3. To recommend strategies to enhance empathetic communication skills among emergency nurses.

Research Questions

  1. How does emergency nurses’ empathy affect patient experience at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi?
  2. What is the relationship between nurse empathy and patient satisfaction in the emergency department?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to improve empathetic communication in emergency nursing?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Emergency nurses' empathy positively impacts the patient experience at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi.
  2. There is a significant correlation between nurse empathy and patient satisfaction in emergency care.
  3. Improving empathy training among emergency nurses will enhance patient experience and satisfaction.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on the impact of emergency nurses' empathy on patient experience at Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi. Limitations may include difficulties in measuring empathy, potential biases in self-reported patient satisfaction, and challenges in assessing the emotional state of patients in emergency situations.
